GARDAÍ in Westport have confirmed that they arrested a man who was found trespassing in the back garden of the house owned by newly-appointed District Court judge Seamus Hughes, but have also stressed that the man’s presence was in no way connected to Mr Hughes’ position.
The arrest took place on Saturday night last and gardaí now believe the man, who was in an intoxicated state, may have been trying to access a back entrance to the Castlecourt Hotel nightclub, but got disorientated.
“We arrested the man on Saturday night after he was reported to be in the back garden of Mr Hughes’ family home on the Newport Road but thankfully there was nothing sinister about the man’s intentions.
“It does appear he thought he may be able to gain entrance to the Castlecourt nightclub via a back entrance and he tried to do so by entering the Mr Hughes’ garden via a laneway on the Newport Road,” said a spokesperson for Westport Gardaí.
Mr Hughes was appointed as District Court judge in Donegal last September after serving as State Solicitor in Mayo for a number of years.
