A 20 year man from Rooskey who was involved in a fatal accident just outside Ballaghaderreen on Sunday night left the scene of the accident by taking possession of a Garda Patrol Car.
Alan Flynn, Rooskey, Doocastle, Ballymote appeared before a special sitting of Galway District Court on Monday but has been bailed to appear at Ballaghaderreen District Court thisThursday, October 26.
Gardaí stated on Monday evening that the man killed in the single vehicle accident which took place at Doogra on the outskirts of Ballaghaderreen was Mr Patrick Spellman (26), of Bothar Buí, Ballaghaderreen. A electrician by profession, Mr Spellman had just returned from a period of holiday in Australia. He is the only son of Noel and May Spellman.
Mr Spellman was killed instantly when the car he was travelling in, driven by Mr Flynn, left the road at Doogra on Sunday night.
Mr Flynn appeared in court with his father on Monday on a charge of damaging a wiper control lever in the patrol car. He was released on his own bail of €1,000 with an independent surety of €1,500 from his father.
Mr Spellman was one of seven people killed on the country roads over the weekend.
