BALLINA native and former President Mary Robinson is to be awarded one of the world’s most prestigious prizes.
After a successful period as United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights, Mrs Robinson will be presented with the Swiss Prix des Generations for her contribution to human rights enforcement. The World Demographic Association (WDA) bestows the annual honour on an international personality whose contribution to future generations has been outstanding.
Mrs Robinson will be presented with the award at a ceremony on August 30 at the University of St Gallen, Switzerland.
James Sharkey, Irish Ambassador to Switzerland, said: “It is one of the highest awards you can get in Switzerland. Mary Robinson is being awarded this prestigious prize in recognition of her lifelong commitment to human rights and her work on behalf of the underprivileged.”
The Ballina native was the first female President of Ireland, from 1990 to 1997, before serving as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997 to 2002.
