Courageous Marie undergoes first operation

Anton McNulty

THE FIRST operation to remove a malignant tumour from the base of the brain of Belmullet woman, Marie Carolan, took place in a University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre yesterday morning (Monday).
Marie arrived in the US late last week and on arrival she had a CAT scan which showed the need to operate. On Monday morning, at 11am Irish time, the first operation took place to remove a piece of bone in front of the tumour and a small piece of tumour to allow the tumour to move away from the brain and reduce the pressure. When she recovers from this operation, a second operation will take place in the next week to remove the tumour.
Fundraising efforts for Marie Carolan’s treatment continue to be organised throughout the county, and included a bucket collection at last Sunday’s Connacht football final in Castlebar. A fundraiser will also take place at the Ballina Heritage Day involving Dessie O’Halloran and others in The Merry Monk tomorrow (Wednesday).
Other fundraising efforts which will take place in the county will be a waxathon in The Talk of the Town, Bangor Erris on Saturday, July 19, a sponsored climb of Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday and a dance with Patrick Feeney at Digger Jay’s, Westport on Monday, July 21.
