Castlebar blackspot resurfaced

Castlebar accident blackspot gets attention

Neill O’Neill

MAYO County Council have resurfaced a stretch of road outside Castlebar, which has been the scene of six accidents in the last two weeks.
So obvious was the proliferation of accidents at one corner on the R311 before the Snugboro junction outside Castlebar – known locally as Flynn’s Hill – that Fine Gael leader Deputy Enda Kenny felt compelled to inform the Council of the concerns of residents in the area.
Deputy Kenny said it seemed that while vehicles may well have been approaching the bend too fast, they seem to be losing control very easily. He called on Mayo County Council to investigate why this is so.
This road was upgraded over the past two years and yesterday (Monday) road crews were back in the area laying a new surface.
One man who is familiar with Flynn’s Hill told The Mayo News that the sign for parking in Castlebar and a wall are still knocked at the corner. He also said that the markings on the roadside where all of the cars went off are still obvious, and that all of the crashes were single-vehicle incidents.
