WESTPORT
GARDAÍ have appealed to neighbours of the elderly to keep an eye on them, after two incidents of concern in the Westport area last week.
A lady – described as being in her fifties – and a boy with short red hair called to a house in Murrisk last Saturday shortly after 1pm and asked for some water. Shortly after they left, the householder noticed that a sum of cash was missing.
Less than an hour later the woman and boy struck again using the same ploy in Aughagower. A handbag was stolen during this incident.
A Garda spokesperson has appealed to all neighbours of the elderly to keep an eye on them and has warned all householders to be aware that there are unscrupulous people around who are looking to take advantage of any situation.
The spokesperson also warned all people not to open their doors to strangers and to use door viewers and chains, and not to be afraid to close the door as opposed to leaving people standing there unsupervised. It is also recommended that people do not keep large sums of cash in their houses.
