Hotels may return to tap water

MAYO COUNTY COUNCIL may pilot a project in conjunction with Westport hoteliers to promote the use of tap rather than bottled water. The proposal has been mooted by Cllr Margaret Adams, the Chairperson of the authority’s Environmental Strategic Policy Committee.
Speaking at last week’s meeting, Cllr Adams said that such a project could test the feasibility of using tap water, thus reducing the amount of plastic bottles being recycled and ending up in landfill.
“Our water quality is good. I have been approached by a number of Westport hoteliers who have suggested the possible installation of a central point for collection of water,” said Cllr Adams.
She observed that the concept had also been discussed during a recent study trip to Ferrara, Italy, where it emerged it was guaranteed that the town’s tap water was better in quality than the bottled water.
Cllr Adams told The Mayo News yesterday (Monday), that there were a number of possibilities to be explored, including the branding of the reusable bottles with each hotel’s name.
IFA representative Mr Michael Biggins supported Cllr Adams’ proposal.
