Polish man still in critical condition

Anton McNulty

THE wife of a Polish man who suffered head injuries in Belmullet over the weekend is holding a vigil by his bedside in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, after he underwent emergency surgery on Saturday afternoon.
The Polish national, who is in his mid-twenties, suffered the injuries during a house party with 18 other Poles, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Yesterday (Monday) morning, Gardaí in Belmullet investigating the incident arrested a Polish national under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act. It is believed that the man arrested is not living in the area and was only visiting other Polish people locally.
The injured man lived in a rented house in Belmullet with his wife for the last five months and both have been working in the mushroom factory in the town.
Superintendent John Gilligan told The Mayo News that the injured person is still in a critical condition in intensive care after undergoing neurosurgery on Saturday afternoon.
“His wife is with him and we will have to wait and see how he will be. At present we are investigating in relation to what happened at the house and how the man fell and how he got injured. He suffered an internal injury to his head but there was no weapon as such and we are looking at how it happened. We have arrested a Polish man, who was in the house at the time of the incident,” he said.
Gardaí were called to the address at College Park, Logmore, Belmullet at approximately 2am on Saturday last, March 29, and an ambulance brought the injured man to Mayo General Hospital. An examination confirmed a serious head injury and he was subsequently transferred to Beaumont Hospital.
A number of Polish people are employed at the mushroom factory and management and staff were shocked and upset at what happened over the weekend. A member of management there described him as ‘a hard worker and a good guy’.
