THE Garda community in Mayo and the north Mayo community in general were shocked to hear of the sudden death of popular Ballina detective Garda, Martin Mitchell (pictured), last Saturday evening.
The father of two, who only recently celebrated his 50th birthday, is believed to have been out jogging in Belleck, when he collapsed and died suddenly.
Detective Garda Mitchell of Killala Road, Ballina, was based in Ballina Garda Station and previously served in Swinford and Ballinrobe. He worked on several high-profile cases during his career with An Garda Síochana and was also well-known for his fundraising work, having completed many charity runs and cycles down through the years.
Detective Garda Mitchell is survived by his heartbroken wife, Helena, and two daughters, Hollie and Jane. He is also survived by his father, Padraig, brothers, Smiler and Brendan, his sister Tina as well as other relatives and a large circle of friends.
Huge crowds attended at Martin’s home yesterday evening as he reposed at his residence on the Killala Road and the same is expected again this evening (Tuesday) between 3pm and 8pm. Martin’s funeral will arrive to St Muredach’s Cathedral at 11am on Wednesday for Requiem Mass, with burial afterwards in Leigue Cemetery. May he rest in peace.
