Achill gears up for fifth Amazing Gearoid’s Three Peaks

News

Remembering Gearóid Murphy

Edwin McGreal

The fifth annual hosting of the Amazing Gearóid’s Three Peaks fundraiser in aid of the Gearóid’s Smile charity will take place on Achill Island this June Bank Holiday weekend.
The fundraiser is in memory of Gearóid Murphy, who died from childhood cancer in September 2014, aged six years.
Since then, the Murphy family from Pollagh on Achill Island have honoured their son and brother’s memory with the Three Peak Challenge every June Bank Holiday.
And funds raised have helped other families enduring the most difficult of journeys with childhood cancer.
It will take place on Saturday, June 1 and the three peaks to be climbed are Croaghan, Slievemore and Minaun. Participants can climb all three or choose one or two to climb.
Climbers will meet from 5.15am at Dooagh National School and the climb of Croaghan will commence at 6am.
Climbers will return to Dooagh and the climb of Slievemore will get underway at 10.30am. At the same time there is a less arduous walk from Baile Slievemore, along Slivemore Road and Tower Road, finishing at Dooagh NS.
Climbers will, once more, return to Dooagh and the climb of Minaun will get underway at 2.30pm.
Furthermore there will be a family fun day from 12.30pm at Dooagh National School. There will be recovery and comfort food following each climb at Dooagh NS.
All proceeds will go towards funding a play specialist in Mayo University Hospital; providing emotional and psychological support to families on a childhood cancer journey; to provide therapeutic ‘Get Away and Smile’ holidays in Achill to families on a childhood cancer journey.
