Westport business burgled by ‘professional’ gang

Anton McNulty

GARDAÍ in Westport are seeking the assistance of the public in tracking a gang who stole thousands of euros worth of tools from a Westport business last week.
Peter Duffy Tool Hire was burgled in the early hours of Thursday morning, February 28, when a gang of up to three persons stole power tools and other equipment from the business, which is located on the Castlebar Road at Drumindoo, Westport.
The burglary was described as a ‘professional operation’, as the thieves managed to break into the business and take the items without setting off the alarm system. Up to three individuals wearing masks could be seen on the CCTV removing the items – which included Makita-, Bosch- and Stihl-branded tools – between 1.30am and 4am.
The equipment stolen from Duffy’s included kango hammers and drills, welding equipment and other power tools, and its value is estimated to be between €10,000 and €20,000.
On the same night, the NCT centre on the Lodge Road in Westport was also burgled but the alarm system was triggered and nothing was taken. This attempted break-in took place at approximately 12.10am, and investigating gardaí believe that the same gang is responsible for both burglaries.
Gardaí are currently trying to determine how the thieves transported the goods and are trying to identify any vehicles that may have been used. They are asking members of the public who may have been in Westport and seen anything suspicious to contact them. Anyone with dash camera footage who may have been travelling in the early hours of Thursday morning is also asked to contact the gardaí in Westport on 098 50230.
