CANNY CADDIES Westport man Seán McGarry Jnr, Managing Director of ShowerGem, which manufactures easy-to-install shower caddies.
Westport father and son’s clever shower caddy to feature on tonight’s Late Late Show
SEÁN McGarry and his son, Seán Jnr, are taking the entrepreneurial world by storm with their shower caddy product ShowerGem – and tonight their product will be beamed into homes all over the land, when Seán Jnr appears on The Late Late Show.
In 2015 and sick of messy showers full of half empty bottles of shampoo and razors on the shower floor, the father and son worked on solving this issue.
Dad Seán, owner of Plastico, which designs and manufactures products for a range of companies throughout Ireland, got to work on the concept design and soon, the younger Seán was out in China researching how the product could be made at scale.
During this time it became apparent to Seán Jnr that Chinese companies were not able to reach the strict quality standards which were desired and so it was agreed that ShowerGem would be both manufactured and assembled in Ireland.
After discussions and a resulting investment from both Enterprise Ireland and a private angel investor ShowerGem established themselves in Westport. It wasn’t all plain sailing though, and a legal battle with international brand Hugo Boss, resulted in the initial product name ShowerBoss having to be renamed as ShowerGem.
The younger Seán developed a huge passion for all things entrepreneurial from the early age of 14 when he began selling blackberries to local hotels and restaurants.
In October 2014, Seán made the county final of the Irish Best Young Entrepreneur competition with an idea for the provision of an instant tourism photography service.
In his final year of college he was named as the overall winner of the NUI Galway Enterprise Awards, an honour that came with a €10,000 bursary for ShowerGem.
In the last two years he has received investment from both Enterprise Ireland and a private angel investor and he has also been a successful participant on the New Frontiers Business Accelerator programme. He was asked to appear on the Dragon’s Den but did not accept this due to unfortunate timing, however he does have high hopes of getting on the UK Dragons’ Den in 2019.
The ShowerGem was formally introduced to the Irish market at the Ideal Home Show Dublin last October, where it was met with a huge demand from customers and the product sold out.
To find out more about the product and the company, tune into tonight’s Late Late Show, which airs on RTÉ 1 at 9.35pm.
