Death of Tiernaur’s ‘Sherlock’ Holmes

MEMORABLE The late Neill O’Neill interviews Brendan ‘Sherlock’ Holmes of Tiernaur, who passed away last week.

The death took place last week of Brendan ‘Sherlock’ Holmes of Tiernaur.
Aged in his 80s, Mr Holmes was a well-known character in the region and shot to fame in 2015 when he starred in the TV series The Local Eye which featured three local papers, including The Mayo News.
Mr Holmes was interviewed by the late Neill O’Neill, former Managing Editor at this newspaper, about the Great Western Greenway and his memories of the old railway line that used to run on that route until it closed in 1937.
His acerbic comment about his father being ‘too lazy to catch the flu’ caught the attention of viewers.
So did his emotional recall of his mother having to get the train from Mulranny to go abroad to work and asking her husband to get the three children to wave white handkerchieves at the train as it passed their home near the railway line.
He was laid to rest in a private ceremony at Killeen Graveyard last week.
