Mulherin appointed to Climate Change Committee

Mayo Fine Gael Senator Michelle Mulherin has been appointed by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to the newly established Special Oireachtas Committee on Climate Change.
Senator Mulherin currently sits on the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine and is the Seanad Spokesperson for same. She previously chaired the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party’s Internal Policy Committee on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.
“Climate Change is one of the major challenges facing all peoples of the world and everyone has a part to play to ensure the lifestyles we live and our relationship which our environment is sustainable.
“A major problem is our modern lifestyles have been built on the foundation of fossil fuels and technologies and mass production systems developed therefrom. Therefore changes from this status quo can lead to major disruptions and financial cost to both people and business. Without a doubt government policies and international cooperation can effect change and provide a framework and means to tackle the fallout from climate change which we are already grappling with,” Senator Mulherin said.
“The Committee will be considering the recommendations of the Citizen’s Assembly last November. At the outset I have concerns about some of the recommendations such as a recommendation of a further carbon tax on farmers. I believe this is a blunt instrument and can’t see how it is going to help already cash strapped farmers,” she added.
