A woman in her mid 60s has died following a road accident on the Westport Road outside Castlebar this morning.
A two-car collision took place on the main N5 Castlebar to Westport road at approximately 8.30am this morning.
The accident took place at an area known locally as Coyne’s Corner, on the Westport side of the Manor Village housing estate and the Castlebar side of Cosgrave’s Car Sales.
The female driver of one vehicle was removed to Mayo University Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. A second driver, a man in his mid 30s, was also removed to Mayo University Hospital with minor injuries.
The road is currently closed and is expected to remain closed until 4pm this afternoon. Diversions are in place. Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are currently at scene.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information to contact Castlebar Garda Station on 094 9038200, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
Motorists going from Castlebar to Westport or vice-versa, particularly those driving heavy goods vehicles, are advised to divert via Newport.
Mayo Road Safety Officer Noel Gibbons has advised that traffic should avoid local roads if possible, as they are not capable of taking heavy traffic and will become blocked, causing further delays.
