Kids invited to tell Clew Bay tales

INSPIRATIONALThe central theme for all the stories in the writing competition will be Clew Bay.

Children of West Mayo! Have you been out on Clew Bay, sailing, kayaking or fishing?  Do you like to tell stories, draw mountains by the sea or sea monsters below the water? Have you walked along the shore or up Croagh Patrick to look down on the islands, or ridden your bike along the Greenway watching the waves roll into the bay? Have you watched for dolphins or whales? Maybe you’ve dreamed about the people who lived here long ago and wondered what they ate, how they lived or how they got around?  If you say ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then you have a story to write or draw and a chance to win amazing prizes.
Open to children living in Mayo, aged 9-12 years (on May 5), this writing contest is a joint effort of Mayo Sailing Club (Rosmoney), Books@One (Louisburgh) and The Mayo News (Westport). The assignment is to create a short story, poem, or a short graphic story using drawing or photographs. The maximum length is 500 words or three A4 pages for a graphic story.
The central theme is Clew Bay and it can cover any aspect such as sailing, boating, angling, living on the bay, history, ecology, wildlife, environment or pollution. As long as it tells a story, it qualifies to be considered. The piece may be fiction, fantasy, memoir or non-fiction.
Prizes include two one-week introduction to sailing courses, including boat hire and junior membership in Mayo Sailing Club for 2018, as well as a €50 book token from Books@One.  The short list of ten finalists’ stories will be published in The Mayo News! A long list of the best 50 stories will be compiled and published as a book which will be available at Books@One. Imagine becoming a published author before even coming close to your Leaving Cert!
If you enjoy telling stories, have a lovely memory, or saw something interesting, and if you are between the ages of 9 and 12, get your pencils to paper or your fingers to keyboards. If you need help getting started, talk to your teachers or start brainstorming with your family and friends. But don’t delay because your story must be received by Books@One no later than April 1, 2018. Winners will be announced on May 5 during an open house day at Mayo Sailing Club.
