Achill Island is getting ready to get ‘All Shook Up’ as the Achill Musical and Dramatic Society get ready to stage their second ever musical this week.
The cast and crew of the Achill Musical and Dramatic Society have been putting the final touches for the production of ‘All Shook Up’, a musical comedy inspired by the music of Elvis Presley.
Following on from the success of their debut performance last year, Grace Anne Lynch, the Chairperson of the Achill Musical and Dramatic Society said they were eagerly looking forward to the opening night which takes place this Thursday, February 15 in Coláiste Acla, Dooega on Achill Island.
“We cannot wait to put on the show and as the opening night comes ever closer, it is starting to really come together and promises to a really enjoyable show,” she said.
“The Achill Musical and Dramatic Society was only formed in 2016 and last year was the first time we ever produced a musical. We didn’t know how it would go but the reaction and the good will from the community towards us gave us the confidence to carry on. We choose All Shook Up because it is a light-hearted comedy and the audience will be bopping along to the Elvis hits. It’s a show which will appeal to all ages.”
‘All Shook Up’ is set in a sleepy little town in the US Midwest where loud music, public necking, and tight pants are outlawed. All changes when the a hip-swivelling, guitar-playing roustabout, Chad rolls into town on his motorbike and incites some rebelliousness in the citizens.
The cast are made up entirely of Achill natives or people living in the parish and stars Stephen McNulty in the lead role of Chad and Tracy Hanley as Natalie who is out to win his heart. The other principal characters include James McNamara as Jim; Gráinne Calvey as Sylvia; Denise Cafferkey as Lorraine; Anthony Doran as Dean; Anton McNulty as Dennis; Siobhán Campbell as Miss Sandra; Grace Anne Lynch as Mayor Matilda and Seán Swift as Sheriff Earl.
The production team of Director Sharon Lavelle, with Phil Duffy the Musical Director and Jason Guthrie, the Choreographer have returned for another year to get the cast into character for the show. Speaking ahead of the show, Sharon Lavelle praised the commitment of all the cast.
“‘All Shook Up’ is one of the most difficult musicals to produce and it was a great challenge for a society in only their second year to take it on. However, they have really surprised me and they have been a joy to work with. The majority of the cast have little experience of performing on the stage but you’d think they were at it all their life,” she said.
The show will be staged in Coláiste Acla in Dooega, Achill on Thursday, February 15 at 8pm; Friday, February 16 at 8pm; Matinee show on Saturday, February 17 at 2.30pm and the final show on Saturday, February 17 at 8pm. Tickets are selling fast so don’t miss out for a great nights entertainment. Tickets cost €20 per show with a concession price of €10 for U-16s for the Matinee show only.
