The much-awaited filming for the Westport GAA Oskars movies commenced last weekend. The casts of the different movies have been busy rehearsing in different locations around town and will continue to film through next weekend.
In total, seven different films are being made as part of the club’s special fundraiser, which will culminate with a Gala screening night, taking place on March 10 in the Castlecourt Hotel.
‘The Snapper’ cast got the filming under way in Blouser’s Pub on Saturday last and successfully completed their final scenes in the Cottages on the Quay Road. Local councillor Christy Hyland helped produce the ten minute movie and was glowing in his praise for the cast of local Snapper actors.
Filming of the ‘Fr Ted’ scenes took place in the lingerie section of Shaws Department store in Castlebar. It was a snowy 8am Sunday morning start for the cast and filming crew. Producer Paddy Reynolds was seriously impressed with the standard of acting from Fr Ted and his team of priests. Watch out for Mrs Doyle’s guest appearance!
Sunday afternoon saw the filming of ‘Bridesmaids’ in The Dressing Room Boutique on Bridge Street and the Castle Nightclub at the Castlecourt Hotel. Traffic had to be stopped on Bridge Street for what can only be described as a memorable scene by the bride-to-be. Everyone will have to wait until March 10 to find out what happened!
Local GAA legend and Bridesmaids Producer, Seamus Moran, would not comment about any particular scene in his movie. However, he stated that he was confident that an Oscar was on its way to the cast given the quality of the performance from his all-female cast.
Filming continues next weekend with the casts of ‘Forest Gump’, ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, ‘Fatal Attraction’ and ‘The Field’ planning to display their newly found acting skills at different locations around Westport.
The busy organising committee would like to express a big thank you to all filming locations around Westport for letting them use their premises to bring a truly Westport flavour to these iconic movies.
Tickets for the Oskars Gala Night on March 10 are selling fast. Remaining tickets can be purchased at Heaney’s Pharmacy, Michael O’Brien’s, Hastings Insurance, Dr Rossa Horgan, Cluain Ard; Dr Rosemary Smith, Ballinrobe Road; Bargain Basket and the Castlecourt Hotel.
