AN elderly man remains in a serious condition in hospital after he was struck by a car while walking along the old N5 near Charlestown on Saturday.
The incident occurred two kilometres from Charlestown at approximately 6.45pm on Saturday evening when the man, who is in his late 80s, was struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian was removed to Mayo University Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
Traffic diversions were put in place overnight and Garda forensic investigators were called to examine the scene on Sunday morning to carry out an investigation. The road was eventually re-opened to traffic just before 1pm on Sunday afternoon.
It is understood the occupants of the car did not receive any injuries but were said to be in shock. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the accident and anyone with any information is asked to contact Claremorris Gardaí at 094 9372080.
Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man was arrested by gardaí after €22,000 worth of drugs were seized in a Ballyhaunis premises on Saturday. A large quantity of cannabis and amphetamines were found following the search of the house.
A foreign national was detained under Section Two of the Criminal Justice Drug Trafficking Act and detained at Castlebar Garda Station for questioning.
