Excitement building in Achill as New Year Festival approaches

Cory Kilbane

As the New Year approaches, excitement is building around Achill as the island is set to host its first ever New Year festival.
The Smithwick’s 10o West Festival will take Achill by storm this New Year as huge crowds look set to descend on the island over the festive period.
“You can really feel the excitement starting to build around the area,” said Manager of Achill Tourism Seán Molloy. “There have been a huge amount of enquiries about accommodation in the office so far. We’re absolutely delighted to be working along with the sponsors to bring something like this to the island,” he added.
The festival will take place over two days (December 31 and January 1) and there will be a range of both daytime events and evening entertainment available to all those who come along.
The daytime events will include cycles along the Great Western Greenway, kitesurfing, guided walks and yoga sessions.
As night falls, there will be a boutique music festival. Acts such as Daithí, Stomptown Brass, Lumo & Talos and more will be providing the entertainment over the two nights.
The majority of the music will be played in the Annexe Bar, Keel, where there will be a special nordic tent erected at the back.
“We are delighted that the organisation of the event has gone so well and we cannot wait for it to come around now,” Molloy concluded. Tickets for the event include two daytime activities, access to the Keel tent and a complimentary pint of Smithwick’s. Tickets for the event are now sold out.
