Sadness at sudden death of Noreen Feehan

Michael Commins

THE news of the sudden death of Noreen Feehan, Drimhoskert, Kilmeena, was received with sadness and regret throughout the local region on Friday. Noreen, who was in her mid-60’s, took ill and died at the family residence. She was wife of well-known farmer and livestock haulier, Pete Feehan, and the family have a strong affinity with the farming fraternity in various parts of the country.
Noreen, formerly Joyce from Drummin, was in Newport with Pete on Thursday night and in great form. Friends who had been speaking to her in Newport were stunned to hear the sad tidings on Friday morning.
She was known as kind and good natured and was one of the top fund raisers for Rock Rose House and the Mayo Cancer Support Association in Castlebar.
Noreen had a great sense of community and was a staunch and loyal supporter of Kilmeena GAA Club over the years, always ready and willing to lend a helping hand.
She had a great love for darts and was a member of the Mayo League winning teams with both Nevins’ and Reids’ in Newport in former times.
One of her colleagues, Rosaleen Carey from Skirdagh, Newport, said Noreen was very much a central character on those teams. “If Noreen hit the dart board, there was no fear of the dart falling off!” she said while expressing condolences to the Feehan family and paying tribute to a good friend.
She had a real fondness for traditional country music and ballads and was an avid listener to her favourite shows on Mid West Radio over the last three decades.
Pete’s life in the livestock business has seen him make friends in numerous counties and many people travelled long distances to show their support for Pete and his family at this sad time. They included a group of six who made the journey from Laois as well as others from Wicklow, Waterford and Wexford.
Reposing was at St Dominic’s Funeral Home, Newport, on Sunday evening with removal to Myna Church. Requiem Mass on Monday morning was celebrated by Fr Jim Walsh and was followed by burial in Myna Cemetery.
Noreen is deeply regretted by her husband Pete, daughter Caitriona, sons Peter, David, Joe and Gary, grandson Shea, her sister Catherine in Coventry, brothers Gerry and Peter Joyce (Drummin) and Michael (Coventry), the family circle, relatives, neighbours and friends.  May she have peaceful rest.
