Castlebar-man Colm Cosgrave has bought Tim Hastings garage in Westport.
Hastings’s closed last month and Mr Cosgrave opened on Friday last.
He already operates a used-car garage on the Westport Road in Castlebar and has been involved in the motor trade since 1981.
Mr Cosgrave confirmed to The Mayo News that he is currently in talks with a handful of different car companies with a view to opening two car dealerships in the New Year in his Westport garage.
The new garage is called Colm Cosgrave Cars and will employ 12 staff initially with Mr Cosgrave predicting that number to rise to over 20 in the New Year.
“We have been looking at expanding our business for some time and the availability of Tim Hasting’s property presented an ideal opportunity to do so,” Colm Cosgrave told The Mayo News last night (Monday).
As well as running new car dealerships, Mr Cosgrave said the garage in Westport will also sell ‘prestige second-hand cars’ such as Audi and BMW cars.
“I’m looking forward to this. The future of the motor industry is looking bright and I can see a growth of seven to eight percent in the new car market in the New Year with the increased sales of petrol and hybrid vehicles,” he said.
He added that Cosgraves Garage in Castlebar will continue to trade as normal with planning permission submitted for a new car showroom and extension to the existing filling station and shop.
Mr Cosgrave has been in business in Westport before, having run an Esso shop and garage from 1987 to 1991 on the Castlebar Road, where Corrib Oil is now.
