Last of Inishgowla-born islanders laid to rest

Áine Ryan

THE last of a long line of islanders to be brought up on Clew Bay’s Inishgowla has died. In her 90s, Margaret Meaney (née Staunton) (pictured) resided on Atlamont Street, Westport, for much of her life and died peacefully there last week surrounded by her family. Margaret was devoted to her late husband Jim, who spent much of his working life on sea. She was a loving mother of Mary, Jim and John and cherished granny of Jim, Conor, Nancy, Isobel, Aoife, Briena, Anna and Seanie. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Brigid, brothers John, Aidan, Tommy, Colm and Fr Joe, sisters Frances-Teresa, Briena and Maureen (Sr Enda). Margaret will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren, daughters-in-law Jackie and Siobhán, brothers Fr Jim (Australia) and Gerard (England), sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, great grandnephews, great grandnieces, other relatives, the many members of the extended Meaney and Staunton families and a large circle of treasured friends and wonderful neighbours.
Margaret reposed at her home on Friday, December 1, with removal to St Mary’s Church, Westport afterwards. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Saturday, December 2, with burial afterwards in Aughavale Cemetery. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
