Anton McNulty

GARDAÍ in Castlebar are investigating the circumstances of an apartment fire which resulted in the death of a 65-year-old man, who has been named as Jimmy Gleeson.
The fire in the one-bedroom apartment, located on Station Road, Castlebar, took place on Sunday evening, November 12, and Mr Gleeson was found dead at the scene by members of the fire service.
The alarm was raised at approximately 8.40pm by neighbours who attempted to come to Mr Gleeson's assistance but were prevented by the extent of the fire. The apartment is understood to have been badly damaged by the blaze.
The scene was preserved overnight by Gardaí, who carried out an forensic examination of the apartment to try to determine how the fire began. The initial investigation suggests nothing malicious.
The body of the man was taken from the scene to Mayo University Hospital, where a postmortem was to take place on yesterday (Monday) afternoon.
Mr Gleeson man lived alone in the apartment. It is understood that he had a partner and is survived by a young daughter.
