Family and friends of a mother of one who was given two years to live with cancer are to perform a Lip Sync competition to raise money for her treatment.
Thirty-four-year-old Laura Cafferty was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of soft-tissue cancer which only affects six in one million women, after doctors found a tumour in her leg in March.
The Kilmovee native who lives and works in Jersey in the Channel Islands also suffers from Multiple Sclerosis and had only given birth to her first child, Maya, when she received the diagnosis.
The cancer could not be treated in Jersey meaning that Laura together with Karl and Maya had to travel to Southampton for intensive chemotherapy for prolonged periods. In early July, they received the devastating news that the chemotherapy had not worked. The tumour in her leg had grown and the cancer had spread to her pelvis and back.
Despite the devastating news, Laura was not willing to give up and is investigating alternative therapies in Germany and the US. However, these treatments are extremely expensive.
Humbled by her positivity and courageous spirit, Laura’s family and friends have been inspired to campaign and fundraise on her behalf.
A Go Fund Me page was set up to help fund the treatment and to date over €81,000 has been raised.
Her husband, Karl who is originally from Charlestown and works as an electrician in Jersey expressed gratitude to the generosity of the public.
“I am overwhelmed by the generosity and support and I really can’t thank people enough. All of this support is giving my family the opportunity to look forward to the future,” he said.
The biggest event will to take place this Saturday, November 18 in Charlestown.
Based on the popular US tv show, Lip Sync for Laura sees personalities from Charlestown and all the surrounding communities take to the stage dressed as their favourite music artist. The choreographed acts have been working hard at rehearsals getting ready to battle it out to be crowned the Lip Sync Superstar. The evenings entertainment will take place in the CBD Complex in Charlestown with the show starting at 8pm and doors are open at 7pm.
All funds raised go towards Laura’s Fight Cancer fund. Tickets €25 are available to buy in Mahon’s Spar, Centra Bellaghy, Casey’s Hardware, Addictions Hair Salon, The Broadway Restaurant and in Howley’s Curry.
It is an over 18s event and the MC will be Kenny Davy of Republic of Telly fame. There will be a full bar followed by a disco with Spin Mobile DJ.
