UNTIMELY PASSING Neill O'Neill speaking at the European Newspaper Congress in May 2015 in Vienna.
It is with a heavy heart that The Mayo News today (Tuesday), October 10, announces the untimely and sudden death of our friend, colleague and Managing Editor, Neill O’Neill.
Neill, who was just 36 years of age, took ill and died at his home in Rosbeg at The Quay in Westport this morning.
Neill is survived by his partner, Emma Joyce; his parents, Colam and Mary; brothers, Conor and Finbarr; sisters, Aoife and Orla; nieces and nephews; extended family and wide circle of friends.
The management and staff of The Mayo News, and the owners, Dermot and Natalie Berry, would like to express sincere condolences to the O’Neill family at this heartbreakingly difficult time.
The Editor of The Mayo News, Michael Duffy, said the staff of the paper, and the town of Westport in general, is absolutely devastated with the news of Neill’s untimely passing.
“There is just a complete sense of disbelief that our colleague and dear friend Neill has passed away,” he said. “Neill has been the heart and soul of The Mayo News since he took over as Managing Editor in 2011, having previously worked as a journalist with the paper from 2007 to 2009. We are all struggling to come to terms with the news that someone so energetic, enthusiastic and full of life has been taken from us at such a young age.”
Neill's remains will be reposing at his residence tomorrow (Thursday) from 1pm to 6pm. The house is strictly private at all other times. Car parking available at St Colmcille's NS, The Quay, Westport. The funeral will arrive at St Mary's Church, Westport, on Friday at 10.30am, for Mass at 11am. Burial will take place afterwards in Aughavale Cemetery.
May Neill rest in peace.
