Construction on Castlebar swimming pool a year behind schedule

News

Project is a year behind and only 60 percent complete

THE new swimming pool in Castlebar is a full year behind schedule, and construction will now not be finished until the middle of 2018.
The new €11 million Castlebar swimming pool is currently under construction at Lough Lannagh and when complete will consist of an eight-lane, 25-metre pool, along with a learner pool, associated changing facilities, gym and aerobics rooms and will have an area of 3,340 square metres.
Funding for the new pool was announced by former Taoiseach Enda Kenny in September 2015, and the construction phase was due to last 18 months. Contractors arrived on site in November 2015, but ‘due to abnormally wet winter months’, the construction did not fully start until early 2016.
However, close to 22 months after construction started in earnest, the project is still not finished, and a report by Mayo County Council has revealed that the project is only 60 percent complete.
Director of Services Tom Gilligan circulated the report to members of the Castlebar Municipal District and advised them that the project is likely to be completed by the second quarter of 2018. The matter is likely to be discussed at this week’s meeting of the Municipal District.
“Roof finishes and glazing are scheduled for completion by late October 2017. The contractor will then have a weather-tight building to progress works internally through the winter months. We estimate the overall project to be approximately 60 percent complete and envisage a projected completion of Quarter 2, 2018 (mainly due to complex system installations and commissioning and pool tank testing),” Mr Gilligan wrote.

Roof structure complete
The report also revealed that the 1,236-metre-square basement and sub-structure works have been completed along with the concrete pool tanks. The roof structure is finished, while the roof covering, pool filtration, mechanical and electrical services are all 60 percent complete.
The construction of the swimming pool is phase one of the entire project and phase two will consist of a 400-metre, eight-lane tartan running track and three all-weather pitches, set to be located on grounds behind Castlebar Halting Site.
The work on the second phase will not commence until the first phase is finished and until a cost analysis is carried out by the council.
The new swimming pool, when completed, will be a welcome boost to the county town. In 2012, there were calls for the project to include an Olympic-sized 50-metre swimming pool, but the idea was scrapped in 2014 when Castlebar-based councillors narrowly voted against the idea.
