A major outdoor mural has been completed in Westport this afternoon (Tuesday), as part of the town’s successful 2017 Arts Festival.
Internationally-renowned artist Maser is behind the unique and colourful artwork, which now adorns multiple facades of the old three-storey schoolhouse building at the Convent of Mercy site on Altamont Street.
The building, which can be seen the entire length of Mill Street, is now awash with a sea of coloured patterns, which the artist explained to The Mayo News, fits into his current theme of setting out to ‘visually alter the landscape from what people are used to seeing in a particular location’.
Including preparation time, work has been underway on the mural for over a week, and Maser says that it represents his largest project in the west of Ireland and the first time to work on a building with a religious association. His work can be seen all over the globe, in places like his native Dublin, as well as Israel and Las Vegas.
