Where better than Lee Keegan’s national school to get the view of the next generation on Mayo’s chances in the All-Ireland Football Final?
Carrowholly NS, three miles outside Westport, is a hive of excitement ahead of Sunday with pupils and teachers alike hoping current Footballer of the Year Lee Keegan and his Mayo teammates can reach the promised land.
The four children we spoke to are all very confident of Mayo winning, but only after a tough encounter. They had interesting views too on where to play Aidan O’Shea after the Breaffy man lined out at full-back in the All-Ireland semi-final games against Kerry.
“Mayo will win by one point and it will be a cracker of a game. Mayo for Sam and Dublin for jam,” said Conor Kelly. Aidan O’Shea is his favourite player and Conor thinks he should play in the half-forward line but go to midfield for the throw-in.
Grace Gibbons’s favourite player is the current Footballer of the Year.
“My favourite player is Leeroy Keegan because he went to our school and his name is pretty cool.
“I think Aidan O’Shea should play in the forwards because he is an awesome forward and can bust through the Dubs and can pop it over the bar.
“I think Mayo will win by two points because they are determined to bring Sam home,” said Grace.
Kathlyn Holland’s favourite player is local star Lee Keegan and she suggests Aidan O’Shea should play in defence because of his tackling skills.
Kathlyn is predicting a very tight game.
“Mayo will win by one point. It will be very close.”
Keelan Corcoran’s favourite player is Patrick Durcan and thinks Aidan O’Shea should be full-forward. He predicts trouble for the Dubs if Stephen Rochford plays the big man at the edge of the square.
“The Dubs’ backline isn’t very tall. Long ball over the top and boom! Goal! Mayo will win by one or two points. This will be their toughest game but this is their year to win,” he said, confidently.
They’ll be waiting patiently for Lee Keegan to return with a special guest, Sam Maguire, if they all turn out to be right in their predictions.
