Gardaí in Mayo have seized almost €50,000 worth of cannabis in three searches in the county in the past week.
The most significant was in Ballyvary on Thursday last where a joint national operation between Customs and local gardaí saw the seizure of approximately €30,000 worth of plants and other drugs, the majority of which is believed to be cannabis.
A man in his late 50s is assisting gardaí with their investigation and a file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
On Friday night at 11pm on the Castlebar Road in Westport, a car was stopped and searched in a planned operation and approximately €10,000 worth of cannabis was found. A male in his 20s was arrested and brought to Westport Garda Station. He was released without charge and a file is being sent to the DPP.
On Saturday, two separate houses in the one housing estate in Castlebar were searched. In one house suspected cannabis plants and cannabis drugs with an approximate value of €6,000 were found while in the second house, cannabis drugs worth approximately €2,000 were discovered.
Two men, both aged in their late 40s, are assisting gardaí in relation to each of the houses.
Meanwhile, gardaí are appealing for the public’s help in relation to two incidents in Mayo Abbey in the early hours of last Sunday morning.
A burglary took place at Malachy Byrne’s pub in the village sometime between 2am and 10.30am where a substantial amount of cash was taken.
Also, in the nearby townland of Freeheen, Mayo Abbey, the front passenger window of a Volkswagen van which was parked at the rear of a house was broken sometime between 1am and 11am on Sunday morning.
