Over 500 people took part in the second annual Islandeady 5k and 10k run/walk held on Saturday, August 5 last.
The huge crowd was a reflection of the local support for the Needham family. The race was held in memory of Jessica Needham, from Lismolin, Islandeady, who died following a tragic accident, aged eight and a half years, on August 2, 2016.
The event was hosted by Islandeady Cycling Club in partnership with Westport Senior Athletic Club and all monies raised will be donated to the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, Dublin.
Jessica spent six months receiving excellent care in the Intensive Care Unit, Unit 8, as a premature baby and only surviving quadruplet.
The National Maternity Hospital, Unit 8 was chosen by Jessica’s parents Pat and Michelle. The run was so well supported that numbers participating exceeded 500. Both adults and children turned out in huge numbers in a fitting tribute to Jessica and to support her family, Michelle, Pat and younger sister Grace, and extended family.
Organisations that Jessica had been a member of came and showed their solidarity with the Needham’s including the Cresham School of Dancing, Westport Junior Athletic Club, Islandeady GAA and Cloggernagh National School.
The sun shone and the crowds of runners and walkers were eager to start with prizes been awarded for first, second and third male and female in both the 5k and 10k. In the U-16 category, there were also prizes for first, second and third male and female, with medals for all children.
Race director Robert O’ Reilly, Islandeady Cycling Club and Westport Senior Athletic Club would like to sincerely thank all the participants, sponsors, road marshals, Civil Defence, those who provided refreshments after the race, all volunteers and all those who donated so generously to this worthy cause which made it such a memorable day.
