Events taking place all over the county to mark Mayo Day


GREEN AND RED Fireworks are set to take place at the Quay in Westport on Mayo Day at 10pm.

Mayo Day is a celebration of our ‘Mayo-ness’ in Mayo communities worldwide and events are taking place in most town’s throughout the county this Saturday.
As part of the Westport 250 celebrations, Saturday evening sees the focus on Westport Quay, with music dance and fireworks.
The ever popular Westport Bike Buffet returns for Mayo Day on Saturday evening at 6.30pm, showcasing the best of Mayo food producers as you cycle. It starts with green and red Mocktails at The Town Hall before a cycle to Hotel Westport for a Mayo Starter. Then it on to Gracy’s at Westport House for a Mayo Gourmet barbecue, and then to Westport Coast Hotel for a Sweet Mayo Dessert. To coincide with the bike buffet arriving, entertainment will be kicking off on the open-air Gig-Rig. Performing in the lead-up to the fireworks display at 10pm, the very melodic sounds of the renowned jazz  group ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’, followed by singer Ryan Hennessey and the Irish Dance troupe ‘Mystic Force’. While the open-air entertainment is free, a charge of €20 is in place for the Bike Buffet, places are limited so booking is essential at Westport Town Hall on 098 28459.

Breaffy concert
As part of Mayo Day and Liberty Tree Conference, renowned traditional musicians Compánach will play a closing concert of Mayo Day in Breaffy House, Castlebar at 8pm.
Admission is free and all are welcome. Compánach is a fast-moving, cross-media concert of traditional Irish music, song and dance. A unique concept, it links the narrative power and subtle judgment of the the photographer’s eye to the genre-specific tapestry and aesthetic precision of musicianship.  Compánach is versatile, a music performance, an alliance of the auditory, the visual, the aesthetic and the cultural.

Ryan Sheridan gig
Ballina is set to come alive for Mayo Day as the historic Military Quarter plays host to the Mayo Day Big Gig, with Irish singer-songwriter Ryan Sheridan set to headline. Platinum-selling artist Sheridan, known for hits like ‘Jigsaw’, ‘The Dreamer’ and ‘Upside Down’ will supported by three of Mayo’s finest live acts – Castlebar five-piece rock outfit ‘The New Social’, energetic Ballina rock trio ‘Mississippi Sheiks’ and Westport roots and blues diva ‘Jo Keegan’. A full bar will be available on-site.
Anne-Marie Flynn of MayoNorth.ie said: “We’re delighted to be putting on this event with the support of Mayo.ie, Ballina Chamber and Moy Valley Resources and showcasing this really unique and historic music venue in the heart of Ballina for Mayo Day. We hope the people of Ballina and beyond will don their green and red and join us for a great night celebrating our Mayo-ness.”
Earlier in the day from 12-3pm, the Military Quarter will also play host to ‘Mayo on Stage’, a showcase of young Mayo musical talent and a tribute to the fantastic traditional music heritage of Mayo. Parade for Ballinrobe  
To celebrate Mayo Day, there will be a special parade in Ballinrobe, starting at 2pm at the Cornmarket, with assembly from 1.45pm.
Organiers have asked you to wear your Green and Red and bring your Mayo flags - and your singing voices if you wish. Refreshments provided after.  More details on all events at www.mayo.ie/news/events.
