AT a time of profound sadness in Westport following the successive recent deaths of several people, young and old, another dark cloud has descended on the community today with the news of the passing in Germany of Pearse Gannon, a native of Deerpark East in the town.
Pearse was son of the late businessman John (Blondie) Gannon and the late Bláthnaid (Bláth) Gannon (nee Hughes), who was the proprietor of Doherty’s Pharmacy at corner of High Street and Shop Street for many decades prior to her death in 2014. Aged 33, he was well-known in Westport, where he attended both primary and secondary school.
Details of his passing are only just emerging, but it is understood that he was found unresponsive in his apartment in Berlin by a friend, who is also from Westport.
One neighbour described a sense of utter shock upon hearing the news, stating that coming so soon after the death of his parents, who passed away within months of each other in 2014, the thoughts of the entire community are with Pearse’s sister Emer Gannon, who is understood to be abroad at present and making arrangements to travel to Germany, and his many other relatives in Westport and beyond.
May he have peaceful rest. More details to follow.
