THE trial of a teenager accused for murdering another teen in Claremorris in 2015 has been adjourned until next May.
The 16-year-old male, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before last week’s sitting of the Central Criminal Court sitting in Castlebar. He is charged with the murder of Dovydas Jenkas who was fatally stabbed in the back garden of a house in the Claremount Manor estate on the Knock Road in Claremorris in the early hours of December 19, 2015.
Mr Michael Bowman, Senior Counsel for the teenager said his client had only recently been returned for trial and asked for it to be adjourned for the preparation of reports.
Mr Justice Tony Hunt was informed that due to another trial going ahead, this murder trial would not now proceed. The court was informed that the next available date for the trial to start was May 16, 2017 and it was agreed to remand the teen on bail until that date.
The victim, Mr Jenkas - a Lithuanian national - was aged 17 at the time of his death and was a a fifth year student at St Colman’s College in Claremorris. He died at the scene.
The accused was first arrested in connection with the stabbing on December 19 when he was initially charged with manslaughter. He was subsequently arrested at his home on Friday, April 1 and brought to Claremorris Garda Station where he was later charged with the murder of Mr Jenkas.
