Organ transplant transforms life of Claremorris child
A CLAREMORRIS mother has described how a kidney transplant has transformed the life of her four year old daughter.
Runagh Burke from Claremorris said the staff of Temple Street Children’s Hospital were ‘like family’ to the Burkes, having known daughter Kate since she was just three days old.
“Through the dialysis, the transplant and the aftercare, they’ve always been there for us when we needed them - at any time of the day or night,” said Runagh.
Last year was the busiest year for transplantation in the 12-year history of the National Paediatric Transplantation Programme at Temple Street with 19 children receiving a kidney transplant from living and deceased donors.
Runagh said she and her family are ‘indebted to all the staff at Temple Street’ and the organ donor and their family.
One of the country’s leading Consultant Paediatric Nephrologists Michael Riordan has described the results of the transplants as ‘outstanding’. The youngest recipient of a new kidney is only two years old and the oldest is 17 years of age.
“When a child’s kidneys fail or when they are born without normal kidney function, it is devastating for them and kidney transplantation can be a means to regain a normal life without the rigorous routine of dialysis,” said the consultant.
“The transplant has transformed life for Kate and for our family – Kate is happy and healthy and we have so much more time to spend together now as a family,” concluded Runagh.
Temple Street is continuing to encourage people to carry an organ donor card and to discuss their wishes with family when all is well.
