THE people of Belcarra, Mayo will extend the hand of friendship to the citizens of Belcarra, Vancouver at a special twinning ceremony in Belcarra Community Centre on Friday evening.
A delegation from the small Canadian community, led by Bruce Drake, will spend the weekend in the Mayo village as formal links between the Belcarra communities are put in place.
Initial contact was made after an internet search by a local resident in Belcarra, Vancouver, threw up the name of Belcarra near Castlebar. Calls were made and procedures put in place and this will now culminate with the visit by the Canadian delegation later this week.
Music sessions have been lined up for Corley’s bar and Flukies bar in the village on Friday night, while the official ceremony will go ahead in the centre at 8pm. A wreath-laying ceremony will be held on Saturday morning in the old cemetery in Castlebar. A number of other get-togethers will be held as the Mayo community plays host to their Vancouver visitors.
