Names wanted for roundabouts

Names wanted for Castlebar’s roundabouts

Michael Duffy

THERE seems to be a new one popping up every week in the county town. And now the public are to be asked to put official names on the nine roundabouts currently in use in Castlebar.
Cllr Kevin Guthrie raised the matter at last week’s meeting of Castlebar Town Council as he said it was becoming increasingly difficult to give someone directions into Castlebar town centre.
“There’s not a lot of point telling someone from outside the town that they should go left at Cathal Duffy’s roundabout if they don’t know where Cathal Duffy’s is! I don’t care what we call the roundabouts but they need to be properly signed, like they are in all the big towns all over the country,” said Cllr Guthrie.
Cllr Michael Kilcoyne said that as there were now roundabouts in the town perhaps the Council should consider calling one after each of the nine sitting town councillors!
However, the councillors eventually agreed that an advertisement should be put in the local papers inviting the public to put forward appropriate names for the nine different roundabouts in Castlebar.
