THE body of a Latvian man who was killed in a single motor vehicle collision on Bank Holiday Monday, June 4 was flown home on Friday afternoon.
Mr Jevgénigs Puzenko, aged 32, originally from Riga, Latvia was killed when the motorcycle he was travelling on collided at Derin Bridge, Partry on the Killawalla to Partry road. He was later pronounced dead at Mayo General Hospital.
Mr Puzenko came to Ireland in 2001 and had been living at New Street, Ballinrobe for the past number of years. He was an employee of McHale Engineering, Ballinrobe.
A prayer service for the deceased was held at O’Malley’s funeral parlour on Wednesday evening. It was concelebrated by Fr John Neesky of the Orthodox Catholic Church and local curate, Fr Michael Gormally. A ceremony was also held at the scene of the accident. Both services were well attended by members of the Eastern European community, along with local people and work colleagues of Mr Puzenko.
According to one source, Mr Puzenko was intending to take a holiday to Riga later in the year. He had not returned home since his arrival in Ireland in 2001.
An inquest into the death of the deceased was held at the Coroner’s Court, Castlebar last week to allow the repatriation of the body to Latvia. No verdict was recorded as Gardaí are carrying out enquiries.
The body reposed at Kilcoyne’s funeral parlour, Castlebar before removal to Dublin Airport for the return journey to Latvia. Mr Puzenko is survived by his parents and sister.
