Swinford native Kevin McGeever wants ‘the whole truth to come out’ about his apparent kidnapping and business affairs, claiming ‘the media have made a proper idiot out of me’.
The one-time estate agent gave his first interview to any newspaper when he was quoted in The Sunday Times two days ago.
He was formally interviewed by gardaí last Thurday about his bizarre story of being kidnapped at gunpoint by three masked men last May from his Galway home and held captive until early January.
McGeever, aged 68, was found in a disheveled and emancipated state on a roadside in Co Leitrim. He claimed he was held captive in a lorry container underground and fed only once a day, a sandwich.
Since his discovery in January, gardaí have been investigating complaints from investors over McGeever’s dealings with them. He is currently being sought by Interpol as well as by authorities in the United Arab Emirates in relation to allegations of fraud.
“I’m very enthusiastic about putting the record straight. There has been a lot of bullshit put in the papers. I couldn’t fight it, because after spending eight months locked away under the ground, I’m still in the recovery mode,” he said.
He said he was only over six stone in January but has put on a stone and a half since. He also says that his doctors have instructed him to ‘take it easy’.
“I’m not up to par at all. I couldn’t go out and start walking. If I collapsed, I wouldn’t be able to get up; it’s that bad.
“I cannot walk very far; I can walk maybe 10 yards and I’m out of breath, I’m ready to break. It’s a shocking situation to be in. And then suddenly I have to deal with all sorts of stuff that I never even contemplated,” he said.
Garda sources have said there are inconsistencies in McGeever’s story. He’s understood to be currently staying with a friend in the midlands.
A native of Meelick, Swinford, Kevin McGeever is well-known locally.
