THE recent general election results have been described as absolutely ‘calamitous’ for some parts of Mayo.
Speaking at last week’s Ballinrobe Electoral Area meeting, Independent councillor Harry Walsh described the election results as disastrous for residents of south Mayo.
“The region of south Mayo is virtually a political wasteland. We have no political representative from that area. The suggestion that the recent election results are in any way good for the people in the south of the county is completely daft. We have absolutely nothing in our area in terms of political representation,” said Cllr Walsh.
“This is the first time in years that there has been no TD from south Mayo. The effort over the next number of years, regardless of parties or political affiliations, should be to rectify the situation we find ourselves in,” said Cllr Walsh.
Cllr Damian Ryan echoed the sentiments of Cllr Walsh and told the meeting that a concerted effort should be made to secure a resident political representative.
“When the national cake is carved it is the area with the TD that always prospers and it looks like we will be getting the crumbs from the table and become a secondary consideration. We need to look at working to solve this and, as councillors, we need to be united on this,” said Cllr Walsh.
