The success of the Great Western Greenway shows no sign of slowing down after the 42km long walk and cycleway scooped the top prizes in the annual Local Authority Members Association (LAMA) awards in Dublin.
The Great Western Greenway came out top in four different categories at the awards ceremony held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Saturday night. The categories included the Best Green Authority, the Best Tourist Attraction, the Best Recreational Facility and the overall Grand Prix Award.
The Grand Prix Award goes to the the project that received the highest average mark from the judging panel. The Great Western Greenway was officially opened last summer by the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny and follows the old railway line from Westport to Achill.
The award for the Best Green Authority was accepted by Chairman of Westport Tidy Towns Committee, Frank Dolan and Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Christy Hyland. Cllr Hyland said the project was recognised worldwide and was an example of the great spirit of co-operation embodied by so many groups in the Westport area.
“This project is an example of the great partnerships that exist between various bodies in the Westport area including Westport Town Council, Westport Tidy Towns, Westport Chamber of Commerce, the local schools, Fás, the Western Fisheries Board and the relentless work of many many volunteers. It is a success story of Westport and is the foundation stone of the green ethos and culture which permeates the town,” he said.
He added that on the back of other recent success in Westport including the Smarter Travel Towns victory and the job announcements at Allergan and Carraig Donn, the awards were yet another ringing endorsement of all the hard work and community effort that takes place in Westport.
The annual LAMA Awards acknowledge exceptional individuals, organisations and companies and celebrate their accomplishments in the areas of engineering, infrastructure, business, history and culture.
The Great Western Greenway was nominated by Mayo County Council, Castlebar Town Council and Westport Town Council and beat off competition from a number of other local authorities from around the country.
