McAndrew case investigation

Padraig Burns

THE family of the boy killed in a road traffic accident just outside Westport town in 2004 has welcomed the decision by the Gardaí to re-investigate the case. A senior officer was appointed last November to investigate complaints made by the family of Kevin McAndrew from Ballinvoy, Aughagower, Westport who died after the motor cycle he was driving was hit by a car from behind in October of 2004. As a result, the decision has now been made to re-open the case and a new investigation will take place.
Kevin McAndrew died eleven days after the motor bicycle he was driving was hit from behind by a car travelling towards Castlebar from Westport. His parents were dissatisfied with the nature of the Garda investigation and they have spent the past 18 months campaigning for an independent inquiry into their son’s death. Senator Jim Higgins, MEP, supported them in their efforts to secure a new investigation.
Kevin’s mother, Kathleen, told The Mayo News that the family was happy with the development. “It’s good news and it’s what we were campaigning for all along,’’ she said.
