You can hang up the winter coats and pack away the boots and tights – summer may just have arrived, and it’s not a minute too soon! We only need a couple of fine sunny days to start planning holidays, picnics and festivals. Summer is such a wonderful season for showing off our style and expressing our personality. Here’s the lowdown on some of this year’s trends for much-loved casual summer staples.
Sundresses are fab. They’re just so unfussy. Unstructured dresses are super comfortable and they make a great cover up at the beach. No worries about matching up, all you need to top off the look is a pair of sunglasses, a great bag and possibly a hat, depending on your own individual style. You will have your own preference regarding length, but let me tell you, the maxi is going nowhere this year. Take your pick from florals, stripes, floaty or off the shoulder. There’s a dress to suit everyone, whether you head to old-reliable M&S or your favourite local boutique.
What better way to get through the last vestiges of a dreary winter than by shopping for swimwear? One glance at the rails, and you’ll see that high-cut swimsuits are back with a bang. This year, the style is more daring, which means high-leg silhouettes that cut to the hip, whether it’s a one piece or a bikini. This trend was huge in the ’90s yet, and now accounts for about 50 percent of swimwear sales.
If last year was the year of skinny sunglasses, then this year is big and bold! I’m glad of this trend as I feel it offers more eye protection than the super skinny ones. You will see every shape, style and colour. Whether you favour yellow, lime green, bright blue or orange, they can be yours. They come with sharp angles, cats eyes, and lots of sparkle. A glamorous addition to your summer wardrobe.
This summer there is a plethora of must-have bags; models sashayed down the catwalks wearing every conceivable kind. Is there a better feeling than going out to buy a new handbag, whether you buy the hugely on trend pom-pom ‘add ons’ or decide to go for statement red, this is the year of bold and beautiful. For the cross-body lover there are some amazing styles, including florals and sequins. Chanel had lots of plastic, Fendi had circular handles, and Dolce and Gabbana showed us a range of straw bags.
