In the year after they formed in Castlebar in 2009, indie/rock band New Sunset Hotel reached No 10 in the Irish charts with their independently released debut single ‘The Bitter End’. Not bad for a new act, and a good indication of the success to come.
Noting the single’s popularity in Ireland, Wet Records gave the song a UK release, and it was launched to a sell-out show at the renowned Monto Water Rats Theatre, London. In 2011, the band focused on recording their debut album and are due to release an EP over the coming weeks, as well as a video on YouTube. The band also has a new bass guitarist, Joey Kenny, who joins original members John Murray (vocals/keys), Mark Calvey (guitar) and Ian McDonell (drums).
New Sunset Hotel have supported established Irish acts The Coronas, and Bell X1 at The Royal Theatre in their hometown. Their music has been played on BBC Radio as well on as major Irish Radio Stations 2FM and Today FM. Their sound is influenced by American acts such as Bruce Springsteen, The Killers, Pearl Jam, and closer to home, stadium fillers U2, Coldplay and Snow Patrol.
The band returned to London last weekend for a gig at the Wilmington Arms Hotel, their first UK show of 2012, but they will be coming back to play dates in Mayo and Galway this summer.
