A little local pampering for Christmas

LITTLE WONDERS Your local chemist is a treasure trove of gorgeous gift sets and fabulous stocking fillers.

What kind of gift buyer are you? Have you been stock piling since the last January sales or are you frantically scouring the shelves this week to find that perfect something for your significant other? It’s this time of year that brings out either an infectious excitement or a begrudging attitude. The main problem with gifting is trying to get it right, we all have far more than we will ever need, so it might well be a case of ‘the thought that counts’.
This year I’ve made a huge effort to keep all my buying local. Small family businesses are closing on an almost daily basis, which is such a tragedy. Rather than go to the large beauty counters for my gifts I decided to opt instead for our chemist. They are like a ‘one stop shop’ for every taste, whether it’s jewellery, gift sets, scarves, candles or toys.

Gift sets
Gift sets always offer amazing value as you get at least three products for less than half the usual price. Declaré was the first skincare line formulated exclusively for sensitive skin and their Pro Youthing set at €35 is fantastic value. The Multi Lift Serum has just won a beauty industry award. You can also buy himself a Declaré trial three-piece set for €19.95, containing shaving foam, shower gel and moisturiser. I picked up some love Declaré products in Staunton’s, Louisburgh.
Another tip for men is Ziaja, a great affordable range and their gift set of grooming essentials will make a welcome stocking filler. It costs €10.99 and is widely available in chemists nationwide. You might also plump for the Nivea Man wash kit at €16.75, complete with lovely wash bag.
Back to the ladies, and the Blank Canvas Contour palette will get you extra brownie points, it’s €19.99 and gives you six powders, a highlighter, setting powder, plus a blusher and two bronzers. Overall great value.
Roger and Gallet Gingembre Rouge gift set contains a beautiful Well Being Water and Body Lotion (€20) – it’s a sophisticated range and smells divine. The Hand and Nail three pack set cost €18, while the Sublime Hand Cream gift is €6.50.

Stocking fillers
Is there a woman out there who doesn’t love candles? Well the fabulous Max Benjamin range offers great value gift sets, the three-favourites pack costs €35, while the Diffuser and Candle set is an affordable €40.
Another great stocking filler is the set of fur cuffs I got in the Mall Boutique in Westport. Available in loads of colours and a snip at €12.50. They will instantly bring any coat or dress bang up to date. All the local boutiques have fabulous wraps, and faux fur stoles.
Why not treat someone to a new hairdo? Check your local hairdresser, they will sell vouchers to suit every pocket. Your local Beauty salon is a great place to get the nails done, and have a pedicure while you’re waiting for them to dry! A lovely gift idea.
The main thing is, try and stay local. You will be delighted at the vast choice and availability. And another thing….you wont get the same level of personal customer experience in any of the big stores.
