The pursuit of happiness

“Enjoy yourself!” This is something I was constantly urged to do by the Hungarian captain of our family party during a visit to his country. (Incidentally, there were occasions when it did not seem an option, like when we were surrounded by armed guards at the Austrian border, or when we were attacked by the wives of gypsies, who were serenading us.)
Now, years later, I am reminded of the importance of this advice when trying to decide what actions, or occupations, to indulge in. Lately I seem to do nothing but compile lists. Lists of things I hate; lists of things I love; lists of charismatic people… and now here we go with a list of pursuits that are enjoyable.
It seems important to recognise and cultivate whatever one finds pleasing, so as to concentrate on experiencing it as often as possible. This particularly applies to VOCs (Very Old Cripples) who are no longer physically active. So far, the following are on my list, which is open to expansion and which might inspire others to scrutinise their own activities.
Making lists is something that is, in and of itself, quite fun, and it can lead into something else which I enjoy – writing, a carry on from previous days that is mercifully sedentary. And, while sitting, the daily crossword can be tackled – something that could help stave off senile decay, as well as keeping me in practice for the scrabble parties we villagers hold in each others’ houses – really fun occasions.
These gatherings naturally involve food, and pretty high on my enjoyment list is eating food I have not prepared myself. And talking is pleasant too, on these occasions and indeed on others. Talking connects you with people and generates a sense of belonging to the human race. For this reason, plenty of friends are important for variety and stimulation, and I am very lucky in this respect. I am also lucky to have a large and extended family.
Another source of pleasure for me is colour, something that is known to affect the emotions. This can be expressed in what one wears – in my case it evolved into a beret/scarf/jumper combination that every day sets up a feeling of enthusiasm and vigour as soon as donned and which also seems to light up those whom I encounter. Having a good effect on others of course enjoyable too, so kind words and gifts bestowed on friends will lighten your heart as well as theirs.
Reading, of course, has a prominent position on the list, with TV up there, also. But, through it all, enjoyment would be impossible without warmth – so one can be cold and happy.
Indeed perhaps overall happiness simply consists of not being unhappy – of not being sick, or not having the obligation to feed and clothe anyone, of being able to decide for oneself what to do. And even to do absolutely nothings whatsoever.
