Performance artist Denis Buckley brings ‘Brightness’, an intriguing and provocative one-off performance, to The Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Monday, May 17, at 8pm.
Described by the artist as ‘a live performance with harsh words … a 21st-century Aisling: a vision text for the next 100 of the Republic.’
A live performance with video and original sound by Denis Buckley, Brightness questions the role of past vision in Ireland’s current self-defining, and investigates the kind of tangible role imagination could play in the country’s future consciousness.
Through a mixture of original free verse in English, ancient/contemporary poetry and popular song in both Gaelic and English, Buckley suggests is made that Irish identity is formulated from the poetic imagination.
Denis explains: “This is a powerful visceral spoken-word audio-visual performance, which demands to know how a country first imagined in poetic minds could turn out how it has, and if indeed it was those very visions that were to blame.”
Provocative and intriguing, this promises to be a unique and stimulating multimedia experience.
The performance runs uninterrupted for 40 minutes and is followed by an open discussion on the themes of the work with the artist.
Denis Buckley was born in Kerry and has lived in London for 25 years. He was a member of the influential multi-media performance company ‘The People Show’ for ten years before touring his own brand of site-specific interventions within the UK, Ireland and America.
