Mayo bands unite for Ghana

Castlebar-born singer/songwriter Luke Davis (pictured), now living in Westport, is heading off to Ghana in July in the company of two local women, Noeline Haylett and Nancy Glavey, both of whom are very involved with Third World projects.
The team will be heading for a six-month stint to a town called Ho in southeast Ghana. The popular entertainer will teach the children there art and music. As part of the fundraising drive for the trip, there will be a benefit concert on May 15 in the Wyatt Hotel, Westport. The night is being organised by Luke and his good friend, local musician Michael Kelly.
Two great Westport bands What the Funk and The Paul Kirwin Band will be on stage for what promises to be a great night of entertainment.
Luke Davis first came to public attention in 1989 with an appearance on RTÉ’s Nighthawks. Since then he has reached the finals of RTÉ/BBC’s Go For It and Let Me Entertain You, and had a single in the Irish charts. Describing his style as ‘easy listening’ and citing Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and U2 among his musical influences, Luke’s songs “are life experiences coming with a touch of fire.”
Fans will be delighted to hear that Davis is also performing in The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, tomorrow night (Wednesday), with a line up of well-known musical talent from Mayo: David Warde (bass), Joanne Keegan (backing vocals, fiddle), Anthony McNamee (drums) and Charley Cusack (guitar). Support on the night will be provided by Luke’s daughter, Zoe, who is, in Luke’s own words ‘greater than I am’.
