FILM Ballina Film Club screens ‘Broken Embraces’

Going Out
Four-way tale of dangerous love

Ballina Film Club’s spring programme continues with the Spanish film, ‘Broken Embraces’ (‘Los Abrazos Rotos’), which will be screened at Ballina Arts Centre on Tuesday next, March 9, at 8pm.
Pedro Almodóvar’s film, shot in the style of a hard-boiled 1950s American film noir even though it’s in colour, centres on a four-way tale of dangerous love. The cast includes many Almodóvar regulars, such as Ángela Molina, Lola Dueñas and Penélope Cruz (pictured).
Mateo Blanco (played by Llius Homar), a blind writer whose pseudonym is Harry Caine, narrates a tragic and powerful tale of fate, jealousy, abuse of power, betrayal and guilt.
Almodóvar’s regular muse Penelope Cruz steals the show as Harry’s lost lover, Lena, in this moving, warm film. ‘Broken Embraces’ was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film title in this year’s Golden Globe Awards.
Admission to the Ballina showing is €7 (seasonal membership rates available).
