A new comedy club, titled ‘Wild Comedy’, has been introduced in Westport.
Dublin native Diane O’Connor, who now lives in the town, has set up a comedy club which has been an instant success among local people.
“When I moved to Westport in November of last year, I thought it would be a great place to introduce a comedy club. As a town that is well known for its arts, and the fact that there wasn’t already a club in the area, I thought it would be a nice thing to try. Likewise, I love doing stand up, that’s my passion and I want to be able to do it as much as possible,” Diane old The Mayo News.
“I’ve been doing stand up since 2012, after I took a course with my friend and continued on from there. I’ve performed at a lot of the clubs in Dublin including The International Comedy Club and Cherry Comedy at Whelan’s. I’ve also performed in Edinburgh, London and went on a tour of Ireland with my solo show ‘Breastfeeding Alfresco’,” she explained.
The new monthly comedy club, which began last month on May 17 in Blousers, has had a brilliant reaction to date with a full house turning out on opening night.
“I was chuffed with all the support from the local people. The comedians who performed on the night have been in touch saying how much they enjoyed it and they thought the audience were fantastic. All the feedback has been really good and it makes me exited about the upcoming show this Friday,” she said.
“This Friday, we have four comedians performing on the night. New comedian Emily Ashmore, who has recently won Cherry Comedy Breakout Act 2019; Danay Kidane who is a regular on the scene, Allie O’Rourke another comedian who’s big in Dublin and headlining we have Brian Gallagher, who runs his own club and is one of the contributors on The TRY Channel on YouTube. It will be an exciting show, four different comedians with very different styles, it should be good fun,” added Diane.
This Friday, June 14 is the second night of ‘Wild Comedy’ and will take place once again in Blouser’s pub, on James Street in Westport. Doors open at 8.30pm, show begins at 9pm with €5 admission on the door.

In advance of the gig next week, from 6pm to 7.30pm, Diane will be running an informal drop-in stand-up workshop for anybody who wants to give it a go themselves. If anyone wants to know more about that, they can message Diane on her Facebook page Diane O’Connor Comedian.
